So you failed your first one-hour glucose test. I’m sure you’re super annoyed that you have to go back for a three-hour glucose test. That means this time you’ll have to get poked four times! I think that was one of the worse things about pregnancies for me, as I dread needles.

I had many friends give me recommendations on how to pass the second test (or even the first), from drinking lots of water, to fasting for 48 hours, etc. I would recommend following the doctor’s and lab’s instructions. I wouldn’t recommend doing anything to get a false pass. If you in fact have gestational diabetes, you probably want to know to get it under control. For me, I was able to control my diabetes with excercise and diet. It was hard but it’s doable. If you’re not able to get it under control, the doctor will get you on insulin shots. Even if you get it under control, if you have gestational diabetes, you have to test your blood sugar level every day. That means poking your fingers four times a day, everyday.

If you don’t want to get on insulin, follow the below steps

  1. Check your blood sugar levels everyday, four times a day. This means first thing in the morning, and after every meal.
  2. Walk for 30 min a day (Or better yet, after every meal).
  3. Eat foods low in carbs and higher in protein.

I had gestational diabetes with two of my pregnancies and it was so difficult to figure out what I could eat that wouldn’t spike my blood sugar level. Below are some easy suggestions.

Going out

  • Chipotle bowl with salad base
  • In-and-Out double double protein style with easy spread

Food at home

  • Boiled eggs
  • Avocado mixed with soy sauce, sesame oil and sesame seeds
  • Pho but replace noodles with bean sprouts
